Conditioning

Classical and Operant Conditioning are two every key tools in rehabilitating the insane people in insane asylums. Examples of both types are evident in the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. In the novel shock therapy in refereed to many times. It is used when a patient needs correction when regular method are not working. They are strapped to a table and shock until they have corrected there behavior.
Shock therapy can be both operant and classical conditioning. While it can be used for associating a behavior with a painful shock, it can also be used for punishment and threats. For instance a nurse could say if you dont stop goofing around we will bring yo to the shock room.
Harding in the novel states to McMurphy that the chief has been shocked over 400 times. Because of this, the chief is now terrified of the shaving room because being tied down on a chair with the vibrating shaver reminds him of being shocked over and over again. Conditioning works by associating certain feelings with behavior to correct it. However now when ever the chief feels the metal rubbing across his head he think about being shocked and it scares him.

The Combine

Combine, not simply the word to describe the putting together of two or more ideas or objects. The Combine is the power at be. It is what controls and manipulates everyone in our society. It is where all the wires lead, where everyone is connected and controlled.
Everyone is molded to how the Combine likes it. Every path planned and watched through machines. Only a few can’t be controlled, “being simple like that put him out of the clutch of the Combine. They weren’t able to mold him into a slot.”(52), and when you cant be controlled or you break down and start to loose connection they send you to the Asylum for the nurse and the “Black Boys” to watch over you.
The nurse is the Combines inside boss, the manipulating controller on the inside of the asylum. Wires and cameras in the walls and in all of the machines lead to her room so that she can sit and watch over everyone.  When there is a problem she just sends the “Black Boys” to fix it. The nurse is just one of the Combine layers within the larger Combine.
The Combine controls and manipulates society to the way it likes it, forcing everyone to abide by its rules and no one else’s. People believe they are free but in reality you have never been in control.
